About Pecos County, TX

Pecos County, TX borders Reeves County along its eastern edge near Big Bend National Park with an estimated population as per 2019 census data reaching 14,445 making it one of the least populated counties in West Texas region overall. Its county seat is Fort Stockton but other cities include Balmorhea & Saragosa whilst Pecos serves as its largest town aside from Fort Stockton itself. Pecos County was formally organized from Presidio & Crockett Counties back in 1871 when local residents petitioned for new administrative boundaries – it was posthumously named after ‘Río Pecos’ river thanks to Spanish explorer Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca who explored this region late 16th century onwards.
