Milam County is located east of Austin towards the border between Texas and Louisiana. Inhabited since pre-Columbian times by various tribes including Karankawa Indians who are believed to have given Milam its name thanks to their word Alamatina, meaning friendly or peaceable nation. Today Milam has a population just shy of 24 thousand people spread throughout a richly varied landscape that includes forests, swamps and rolling hills supporting vast pine tree plantations producing timber items from ships masts to railroad ties used across the world today. The county seat is Cameron where visitors can enjoy attractions like the Lee Lockwood Library & Museum or Yegua Creek Park for camping or hiking along its 7 miles trails among majestic live oak trees surrounding two ponds plus fishing opportunities too.
